"There is a county park Black Pond ..." As recorded the famous song of Athos

I think you will not argue with me that one of the components of the success of the film "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers" has become Dunaevsky's wonderful songs based on Ryashentsev's poems. And one of the most memorable of them was the Ballad of Athos "There is a Black Pond in Count's Park"

According to Benjamin Smekhov, he still receives compliments like "How well you played Athos! And especially - you sang about a black pond!"

But in fact, in the film during the performance of this song, the voice is not Veniamin Borisovich. Although it was planned that all the vocal performances of Athos Smehov would be performed by him. He even went to rehearsals before recording songs home to Dunaevsky. And, according to him, although the song is technically very difficult, at the rehearsal for the piano of Dunaevsky it turned out pretty well. The composer also wanted Sdekhov to train at Gradsky, but he didn’t have enough time for this - it was necessary to make an urgent recording.

They allocated very little time for recording songs, and Laughs, who did not have much experience in vocal, was very worried. “Don't be shy,” Dunaevsky said to him. “It turned out at home, it will work out with the orchestra. We take cognac with us, drink it for courage, and I will drive your car back.”

When Benjamin Smekhov recalls this post:

"The studio is huge, conductor Dima Atovmyan, a great master, Maxim's friend. Everything is my first time: such a studio, conductor, orchestra, headphones. I would have to train, calm down. But ... After the first test, Maxim said:" Well, not bad, Three of them were fake, accept brandy and - more boldly! "I have a brandy, of course, not for the first time, but in combination with a new snack (" a black pond ... lilies are blooming there ... ") - the drink went sideways. I sang so bravely and it was loud that it was impossible to listen to this "double." He drank again, sang again, shuddered even more from false recordings. My voice, like a horse, he ditched a drunken "rider" and threw me out of the saddle. Somehow the Athos couplet was recorded in the common song of the Musketeers ("Your fate is in the balance, the enemies are full of courage ..."), but they decided to postpone the main song.

I slept soundly at night. I believed the composer that we would definitely rewrite the song - either in Poltava, or in Lviv, or in Odessa. My friend deceived me, although I myself was most to blame. So it remained in the film "rough recording", made by the voice of one musician. He was met after many years in New York by my daughter. He asked me to say hi to my dad. He recently died, but his voice continues to decorate the film.
When the film came out, I regularly dialed M. Dunaevsky’s phone number and sang to him in a terrible voice: “There is a black branch in the count’s park, there are lilies in bloom, there are lilies in bloom!”

At first, Max laughed, then he began to praise me for perfect singing, then he begged to excuse him, and then for some reason he was so scared that he had been changing apartments, cities, countries, families and telephone numbers for twenty years already - just that I didn’t get through. . "

That musician, whose voice sings Athos, was the trombonist of Oleg Lundstrem's ensemble Vyacheslav Nazarov, whose timbre of voice and performance seemed ideal to Dunaevsky and Khilkevich and close to the role of Athos

By the way, another interesting story, the appearance of the continuation of this song, performed by Margarita Terekhova. After all, Milady’s song (at the moment of Felton’s seduction) goes to the same music as Black Pond. But the lyrics for this song were not written by Ryashentsy, but by Yungvald-Khilkevich himself. And it was like that. Terekhova, whose heroine was not in the film vocal, also wanted to sing, feeling that the songs from the film will be hits. She began to beg the director "to get her a song." But Ryashentsev was away, and Khilkevich eventually decided to write it himself. When the poet appeared on the set, he heard “I was guilty of purity, I was guilty of beauty,” was horrified and was categorically opposed to the song of Milady in the film alongside his lyrics. But at the creative banquet, he could not resist the spell of Terekhova and agreed to the song
