When Eldar Ryazanov was finishing work on the film "Office Romance", it so happened that he had to go to a meeting of the Garage-Building Cooperative on Mosfilm. For 15-20 minutes, thought the director. When he only came out half a day from there, he practically had a plot for the new film
Almost everything that we see in the film - actually happened on Mosfilm. Only the shareholders of the cooperative were not fictitious employees of the scientific research institute, but well-known figures of art all over the country. And all these people, whom he knew for years, whom he considered to be deeply respectable, suddenly behaved absolutely unpredictably
The theme of the actual meeting was the same as in the film he shot later: the land allocated for the construction of garages was reduced; accordingly, it was necessary to reduce the number of shareholders. As a result, from the list of "lucky beggars" excluded those who could not stand up for themselves. And those who had the right to a loud voice, did not intercede for them
And the most shameful thing for the director was that he himself turned into another person. He also did not stand up for anyone, catching himself on a cowardly thought: thank God, he was left in the cherished lists. At a real meeting, Ryazanov did not fall asleep as his hero in the film. His behavior was closer to the professor, played by Leonid Markov - a professor who had two garages for one family, and so that they did not take away the extra garage, preferred to keep silent and vote for an exception
Was at a real meeting and his "son of Mercy" - the son of the chairman of the city council Promyslov. There were prototypes and a multi-faceted chairman in the performance of Gaft, "sold the country" Fetisov, a fighter for the truth in the performance of Akhedzhakova
... This story haunted him. And then Ryazanov decided to make a film with a similar plot: how, in general, decent people under the influence of circumstances turn into cynics and scoundrels. And show this section of society, where there is room for everyone. The very next day Ryazanov went to his co-author Emil Braginsky and in 24 hours they wrote a script for the film
