All the screen versions of Alexander Belyaev

In Soviet times, fantastic films were not frequent guests on our screens. But nevertheless there were authors whose works in this genre were transferred to screens quite regularly. I have already talked about the adaptations of Strugatsky and Bulychev. It's time to remember about another master of domestic fiction - Alexander Belyaev

The first attempt to adapt for the cinema of his work was undertaken as far back as 1939. Then for the Odessa film studio Alexander Romanovich himself wrote a script based on his story "When the lights go out." Unfortunately, this project was not destined to be realized and attempts to film the works of the great Russian science fiction were forgotten until the end of the 1950s (well, except for Disney's refusal in the late 1940s from the adaptation of the "Amphibian Man" due to the impossibility at that time to hold underwater shooting of a decent level). But in 1958 Vladimir Chebotarev, Eduard Rozovsky and Gennady Kazansky took the scenario of the "Amphibian Man" dusting at the Lenfilm studios for several years already. Released in the end in 1962, the film broke all existing at that time records of hire. He looked, almost without exaggeration, the whole country.

The next screen version did not take long to wait. On March 23, 1968, a two-part film "The Seller of Air" by Vladimir Ryabtsev appeared on TV screens. Although he was not as colorful and exciting as "Amphibian", but nevertheless he also forced to adhere to the screen of fans of fantasy of those years

After that, they forgot about Belyaev for a long time. The next film adaptation was released only in 1984. "The testament of Professor Dowell" Leonid Menaker can not be called an adaptation. It is rather a film based on one of the best books by Belyaev, in which only the main characters, the plot and partially borrowed ideas were left from the original

The next film, "The Island of the Lost Ships", published in 1987, Eugene Ginzburg and Rauf Mammadov were also removed based on motives, leaving little of the author's original idea in his buffoonery. But, despite this, the film turned out very good

In the same 1987, in the 12th issue of "This Fantastic World", dedicated to the relationship between robots and people, the screen version of the story "Open, open!"

Then, with a difference of just two years, two very free versions of the novel "Ariel"
First in 1990, Haji Ahmar in Uzbekfilm shoots the picture "Sputnik of the planet Uranus"

And in 1992, Yevgeny Kotov released the film "Ariel"

Both films turned out to be extremely weak, both in terms of technical characteristics, and in acting and directing work

In 1994, there was another quite decent adaptation of the "Island of the Lost Ships"
"Rains in the ocean." Only this time for the film were taken only the first chapters of the novel

In 2004, the television series released a four-part television movie "Sea Devil" based on the novel "The Amphibian Man," in which the action was postponed to our days, and Gutierrez was made a beginning singer from a poor family. That's the only thing that this series can boast of is the stunning locations in Cuba

In 2015, the director Vladlen Barbe based on the same "Amphibian Man" took the cartoon "The Last Man of Atlantis", but, frankly speaking, I could not appreciate it, because I just could not find anything but a few frames

Another attempt to transfer to the screen "Amphibious Man" should be taken this summer by Chinese filmmakers. They are going to shoot in China, the Crimea and the Moscow region. With the help of Lenfilm. Judging by the description of the Chinese people want to do, rather, not a new screen version, namely the remake of the 1962 film

Well, one more project that should start this year is the superhero film "Chosen", which was presented by the brothers Gevond and Sarik Andreasyan back in late 2016. It will be difficult to name this. It is likely to be very much based on the novels of Alexander Belyaev. According to the plot of Ichthyander, the head of Professor Dowell, the woman-Frankenstein Briquet, Professor Wagner, Ariel and other heroes of Belyaev unite to confront the villain Bailey, who steals the air
