It was Nikulin who told Ryazanov the story of an automobile thief stealing cars from speculators and transferring the proceeds to orphanages. Bummed up with the idea, Ryazanov and Braginsky wrote the script exactly under Nikulin, it was they who saw him in the main role. Another example is "Ivan Vasilievich is changing his profession." After the success of the Diamond Arm, the script was written for the duet Nikulin-Mironov. It was they who, according to Gaidai's plan, were to play Bunsh and Miloslavsky. In addition, at this time in the journal "Science and Life" were published studies of anthropologist Mikhail Gerasimov. They, in particular, on the bones of the skull, restored the portrait of Ivan IV the Terrible, looking at which Nina Grebeshkova said to her husband: "Oh, but Yura is surprisingly like him!" But after reading the script, Nikulin refused. He decided that the film based on Bulgakov would lie on the shelf, and he did not want to spend a year on it.

Speaking of Gayday, we can recall two more films where we did not see Nikulin. The first is "12 chairs". Nikulin was auditioning for him in the role of Kisa Vorobyaninov. But he did not convince the director, who eventually entrusted him with a small role as a janitor Tikhon.
The second film is "Can not be." In it, Gaidai took Nikulina the role of the bride's daddy in the novel "The Wedding Accident". But here Nikulin refused. After the second refusal, Gaidai was offended with a joke and Nikulin did not take off any more.

But the tour of the circus in Kuibyshev again confused all plans. Bondarchuk also wanted to shoot Nikulin in "Waterloo", but Yuri Vladimirovich could not withdraw because of illness. Only the third time Bondarchuk managed to remove Yuri Nikulin in his film - "They fought for their Motherland"
