Yesterday I talked about the stars of the world cinema that were shot in the USSR. Among these eminent actors could well be Nicholas Cage, who in the late 80's agreed to star in one of the films of George Danelia.
And it was so. When Georgy Nikolayevich decided to shoot the film "Passport", he needed a foreign partner, since the main action of the film is in Israel. But foreign producers insisted that the main role was played by a foreign actor (Danelia himself wanted to give it to Vakhtang Kikabidze). No, the producers needed almost a world star, and ideally a Hollywood celebrity. Georgy Nikolaevich was given a choice of three actors, including Tom Cruise and Nicolas Cage (who was third, I never found). Danelia chose Cage.
It remained a matter of small - to agree with the agent of the actor. But Cage's agent "track record" of the Soviet director was not impressed. The fact that his works took prizes at festivals in Cannes, Venice, Berlin did not matter - as it turned out, the main thing was that the films were in the world box office, and that Danelia could not boast of it. As a result, the meeting ended with the agent saying: "Nicolas Cage is now very busy and will not be able to meet him in the coming year"
What to do? Danelia decided to seek the help of Francis Ford Coppola, with whom he made friends at one of the Moscow film festivals. Coppola came to Moscow with the film "Apocalypse Now." And he came with the whole family. And Danelia and Sofiko Chiaureli "covered them with a clearing" in some Georgian tavern
In general, Danelia decided to call Coppole in San Francisco. The conversation turned out approximately like this:
- Hello! Can you hear Francis Ford Coppola?
"He is not, and who is asking him?"
- Soviet film director George Danelia
"Nello, George!" This is Giulio. Brother Francis. Do you remember me? And Frank is not, he is in Greece. And what do you want?
- Yes, I wanted to ask him for help - I need to meet with Nicolas Cage.
- What for?
"I want him to read the script for my new film."
- And where are you?
- In America. At the Hilton Hotel.
- Okay! In an hour Nicholas will have you and read the script. This is my son.
In fact, an hour later, Cage was already in the room of a Soviet director. The Italian family. Father's word is law for his son. Moreover, the script really liked Cage and he gave permission for the shooting.
But he did not succeed in playing in our film. The fact is that for two years, while there were preparatory work for the shooting of the film, Cage's fee became ineluctable for the producers. In the end, they agreed that the role was given to the French actor Gerard Darmon
