"The Master and Margarita". All the screen versions of the cult novel Bulgakov

With the screen version of the novel "Master and Margarita" Mikhail Bulgakov has always been a lot of inexplicable. Many eminent directors wanted to make a film based on a book (Ryazanov, Klimov, Naumov, Bykov, Talankin,), but something prevented it. For example, Naumov said that to him in a dream was the wife of Bulgakov and said that the screen version would not take place

Nevertheless, five films on the novel still saw the light. The first attempt was made by Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda, who in 1972 produced the film "Pilate and Others"

True screen adaptation, this can be called a stretch - the film included only the line of Pilate and Yeshua Ha-Nozri. With the amendment that all events are transferred to the present. In Poland, the film did not show at that time. The premiere took place in Germany on March 29, 1972 on the eve of Easter, under the title "Good Friday Film"

In the same 1972, the director Alexander Petrovich withdrew a more complete film version of the novel, which received the prize of the Venice International Film Festival

Nevertheless, this is also not a film adaptation, the differences with the novel are quite significant. The master is not a writer in it, but a playwright who staged the play "Pontius Pilate" and the whole biblical line - excerpts from this play, and Moscow's fuss about the scandalous production

In 1989, another Pole Maciej Wojtyshko attempted to make a more complete version of the film on an immortal novel

Here, in the script, we managed more carefully to the text of the novel. But the multi-part film (and there are two versions of it, the Polish 8-series, and the Russian 4-serial) is rather weak in technical terms, but with very good acting

In 1994, the first domestic adaptation of the novel was realized. Director Yuri Kara withdrew his version of "The Master and Margarita"

It's only because of the differences between the director and the producers that the audience could see the film only in 2011. At the same time, the original 200-minute film was shortened to two hours

A full director's version of the film can be found, but its quality leaves much to be desired

In the film, a brilliant actor's ensemble is involved. But the problems with the technical embodiment of Bulgakov's spirit still leave much to be desired

One can not help but mention another film, which is based on another work by Bulgakov - "Fatal eggs" by Sergei Lomkin. In this film, some story lines intersect with the "Master and Margarita". And there is Woland with his entourage

The last, to date, adaptation of the novel is the 10-series television series of Vladimir Bortko, which was released in 2005

It involves not less than a star cast of actors

The main task of the director was to make the most complete and adequate version of the novel

The series caused a number of ambiguous opinions - from total enthusiasm to complete dislike

Although in the same year 2005 another film was shot based on the novel - the Hungarian director Iboya Fekete made a short film based on "The Master and Margarita". But, frankly, I did not see it. And there is another missing film - in the late 80's Olga Koznova was shot a television movie "Master", in which Masters was played by Oleg Borisov, and Volodda Yuri Yakovlev. Here are just traces of this TV movie I could not find

Well, in the end, judging by the fact that the Cinema Foundation supported the project of filming another movie based on the novel by the Master, soon we will have another version of the film, directed by Nikolai Lebedev. The film is scheduled full-length, but judging by the practice of filming the last few years, I would not be surprised if there will be 2 versions of the film - full-length for cinemas and an extended multi-series for television
