But the cost of this "sweet piece of cake" was, to put it mildly, biting - the heirs decided not to be wasted on trifles and asked for a sum of a quarter billion dollars. This is only for them, without taking into account any costs for further production. And it should also cost a pretty penny - the budget of each season of the future series must be at least 150 million more American banknotes.
In addition, the rights to the saga are not absolute, but very tightly limited and do not extend to all the characters in the famous saga. HBO very quickly decided that this game was not worth such an infusion and decided to see what would come of it. So the battle for the ownership of rights went only between Amazon and Netflix.
The fight was over with the victory of Amazon Studios - they were more motivated. After all, a couple of months ago, their founder, Jeff Bezos, set a task - to find a project capable of competing in popularity with Game of Thrones. And then such a case and provided. They did not lose this opportunity.
So there will be a new series on “The Lord of the Rings” - I don’t think that someone will throw such grandmothers into the empty and will not try to repel them. Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema will help to work on the new series of Amazon Studios. But once again telling the story already taken by Peter Jackson does not make much sense (especially if you are limited in the rights to the characters). Therefore, a new series of several seasons will tell us completely new stories about the events preceding the “Brotherhood of the Ring”, a kind of prequel to a famous story. In this case, the possibility of the appearance of spin-offs is not excluded. But! These stories will have nothing to do with the Silmarillion
