One of the best films about the war has been deservedly considered for many years the picture "The Old Men Are Going to Battle." Its director, Leonid Bykov, dreamed of becoming a pilot even from school. He tried several times to enter an air school, but alas.
However, in 1943 he managed to enter the flight courses for a school for pilots in Oirot-Tour (now Gorno-Altaisk). But quite quickly he was expelled because of the small height (136 cm) and the age assigned (Leonid was only 15 years old). But in 1945, Bykov still managed to enter the Leningrad 2nd Special School for pilots. But a month later the war ended and the school was disbanded.
But love of the sky, to the flight business remained. He really wanted to make a film about military pilots, in the number of which he never managed to get. When he was working on Lenfilm, the studio was looking for a director to shoot the film "Chronicle of a dive bomber" based on Kunin's story. Bykov offered his candidacy and already began to work on the script. But on Lenfilm Bykov was looked upon as an actor, not as a director, and they gave Naumu Birman a film.
In 1970, Leonid Bykov moved to Kiev to the studio named after Dovzhenko. There he and a group of artists were invited to the 5th anniversary of the Guards Air Regiment. And it was with the stories of the pilots of this regiment, many of whom were front-line soldiers, that the birth of the script for the movie "In the battle go alone" the old people began. "
The prototype of two characters, Captain Titarenko (Maestro) and Lieutenant Alexeyev (Grasshopper), was twice Hero of the Soviet Union Vitaly Popkov.
True, to be more precise, Captain Titarenko is a collective character. In addition to Popkov, his prototypes were Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Laveikin, and he received the name and call sign from Dmitry Titorenko, who was the leader of Ivan Kozhedub.
But the "singing" squadron was indeed in the 5th Air Regiment. She had her own chorus, and it was Vitaly Popkov who conducted this chorus with a trophy tube.
There were in the real "singing" squadron and other prototypes of the film's heroes. For example, the prototype of Lieutenant Skvortsov Vladimir Barabanov sent his burning aircraft to the enemy column. The prototype of Romeo was Rustem Marisayev, who had an affair with a girl named Alla, and who died on the same day. By the way, it was Rustem who in fact had the nickname Smuglyanka (because of his swarthy skin).
There were real prototypes for other characters of the film. The prototype of Zoya was Hero of the Soviet Union Nadezhda Popova, deputy commander of the squadron of the 46th Guards Women's Regiment of night bombers. Prototype Vano is a brave Georgian pilot, junior lieutenant Vano Gabunia.
The stories of the front-line soldiers gave the storyline for the film, on the scenario for which Bykov invited Alexander Satsky and Eugene Onoprienko to work.
But the script did not accept the Goskino with the wording "The script is devoid of common sense and far from reality, it just could not be." Goskino did not accept any arguments that it was based on real memoirs of front-line soldiers.
Bykov was on the verge of a heart attack, but he did not give up. Leonid Fedorovich began to read excerpts from the script at meetings with the audience, where these stories were hosted by "cheers."
Gradually, the frontline soldiers began to intercede for the scenario. And then the State Committee gave way.
On February 20, 1973 the film was put into production. True, according to the memoirs of Leonid Bykov's daughter, the resulting film is one hundredth part of Bykov's plan. Thought of other shootings, other equipment, other actors. It was supposed to be a beautiful color film about love and that "Hate destroys! Creates only love!"
